Big Guns

It's Friday night snd Shayne and kidlets are in the car en route to Moggi & Pumpy's (grandparents living 8 hours north). Poor Shayne had to come straight from a hectic day at work to jump in the car for a four hour journey north and probably back as well (meeting grandparents half way). He did offer to do the chemo for me tomorrow if i would do the drive for him tonight.. one can dream. Tomorrow marks the start of the big gun chemo and we thought perhaps a fun week or so away for the kids might be a good thing while we concentrate on hospital goings-on down here.

Treatment this weekend is called Methotrexate, highly toxic substance very adept at attacking fast multiplying (cancer) cells, same drug that has been delivered in smaller doses to the spine via the lumbar punches. Will have the drug for a full 24 hours (all Saturday), after which they let it do its work for 36 hours before they administer an 'antidote' to make it stop killing any more cells. Bit nervous as I've not had this drug before, especially not after a week of preceding chemo and doctors keep telling me to brace myself. Hopefully they are painting worst-case scenarios and it will be better than expected.

After this weekend's treatment there will only be one more lumbar punch on Thursday, then part one of the transplant saga will be complete and i willl hopefully go home for a little recovery before part two.
